    Description

In 1992, now at 30 years ago, American Airlines inaugurated service to the West Virginia resort area of White Sulfur Springs.  Service was from the American hub in Raleigh.  This lot features an envelope that was postmarked at the special postal facility located at the Raleigh Airport on March 28, 1992, and flown on the first flight by American from Raleigh to White Sulfur Springs.  The postmark is quite handsome and is fully legible.  The envelope was backstamped (on the front of the envelope) upon arrival of the inaugural flight at White Sulfur Springs.   The backstamp is not a great impression, but is legible.  Philatelic treatment for the inaugural flight was not requested, and, consequently, properly flown covers are rare indeed.  The cover is listed in the American Air Mail Catalogue as AA-D431Nf.  Properly flown covers are authenticated solely by having the correct postmark and backstamp.  The envelope is in excellent condition.  A rare and important item for collectors to add to their American Airlines collection.  A final consideration – when I serviced first flight covers those many years ago, I use the best envelopes – made from 100% rag content.  They will withstand the passage of time much better than regular envelopes and maintain their pristine brightness and whiteness.
