Description
Offered for sale are four beautiful pieces of American Airlines Flagship silverware. The offering includes the standard knife, fork, and spoon as well as the extremely rare pickle fork. It is my understanding that this style of silverware was used by American Airlines from 1936, when it first acquired the DC-3s, to 1948 when they pulled them out of service. The DC-3 was the premier commercial aircraft at the time.
American’s CEO, Cyrus Rowlett (C.R.)Smith worked closely with Donald Douglas in the development of the aircraft and thus American became the first airline to put it into service.
American reportedly flew 114 of these aircraft. Interestingly, American’s DC-3s were delivered to the airline in Phoenix, to avoid paying California’s sales tax.
All pieces were manufactured by International Silver Company. The two forks and the spoon are completely silver plated. The knife has a silver plated handle with a stainless steel blade. The pickle fork is just under five inches long compared to six inches for the dinner fork. Above is a picture of the two types of forks side-by-side. Note that the pickle fork has only three tines and the outer two have a very pointy shape. I have not been able to determine how many pickle forks were manufactured, but apparently it was a small fraction of the regular silverware.
The pieces will be shipped in a small flat rate priority package. The buyer will pay for shipping and share the cost of insurance to cover the purchase price. The items will be shipped to addresses in the United States only.
As the seller and buyer both agree that the US Postal Service is an acceptable means of shipment, should the shipment be lost by the Postal Service, the seller and buyer will split the loss, resulting in 50% of the total payment to be refunded to the buyer by the seller. With hundreds of sales I have never had a shipment lost, but just in case.
