    Description

    Hollywood History!
    "SPECIAL-OSCAR"
by E.W. Lane. We believe this to be the
    ONE & ONLY
known Special Oscar with the added 'top hat, cane & gloves'.
The Oscars began in 1929 and the Lane Oscars are believed to date to those earliest days.
    Measures just under 10" tall.
With the discovery of this statue, there are now eight known Lane Oscars (see last pic above).Three are just like ours but without the top hat, cane and gloves. And one of those was awarded to "BUSTER" (Buster Crabbe's career didn't take off until the late '30s so probably Buster Keaton?). One statue has his hands raised above his head like he's holding something.
Two statues are holding a book or movie script (one in the right hand and one in the left) but were cast on different bases. And one has a swooping, rounded base with no 'name plaque' space.
With top hat, cane & gloves, was ours created for Fred Astaire (Top Hat 1935)?
These sculptures are superior but we can find no connection with these Oscars and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
We have yet to positively identify E.W. Lane but believe he is the father of Marjorie Lane, Brian Donlevy's wife. They lived in Hollywoodland and the timing is right.
The Lane Oscars are circa 1929-1935ish. Buster Keaton & Fred Astaire did not receive 'honorary' Oscars until late in their lives. Did Lane hand out these "SPECIAL-OSCARS" because he believed they had been cheated out of an Oscar? And same would apply to the rest of them, given to people he felt should have won? With the exception of ours, they all are marked "OSCAR" or "SPECIAL-OSCAR".
    Our statue is missing the
    "SPECIAL-OSCAR"
    metal plate
seen in pic 7 above but found on the bottom of at least one of the 3 other known statues. The photo can be found online and is for "Oscar" confirmation only.
